I got a couple of flaming beer glasses in Las Vegas, and this tall one was perfect for Heretic Brewing Co.‘s Shallow Grave.  Most of their brews have some sort of sinister connotation, and I like the quasi-story behind this one: “perfect for a cool evening out in the woods” while digging a grave, the taste will keep you coming back between shovelfuls so since “you won’t have time to dig a six-footer… make it a Shallow Grave.”  It’s not the coolest of nights tonight, but I do agree that this beer is fetching and I’m distracted as I take sips while writing this.  As a porter with 7% ABV and 33 IBU, it has a warmth to it which I immediately noticed upon first sip, so I understand why this is better for a cool evening as opposed to this warmer one.  The sweet malt gives a distinct chocolate and caramel flavor profile, so the taste with the warmth really does make this best for when you want to warm up with a dessert-like beer.  Personally, I can’t think of any meal off the top of my head with which this would pair well, so I would truly treat it as dessert.  After a long day of traveling back home from Las Vegas, this is a nice way to unwind before I curl up under the tombstone covers.
