Okay, so it’s not winter anymore.  But it’s still a bit chilly at night.  Today we did a lot of research to create pages of events for Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming, so now all of the states west of the Rockies are covered.  To celebrate, and to warm up a bit on this evening that hints at a rainy night, I opened this winter ale from Nøgne Ø.  It is a seasonal brew, so it won’t be around again until next winter, and that’s if any liquor store around here bothers to get this Norwegian specialty.  I had not heard of the Nøgne Ø brewery before, but it has won some awards in the past.  Interestingly, it is also Europe’s first sake brewery.  I have a sinus infection right now and I’m on antibiotics so I won’t drink the whole bottle, but I could still smell the rich aroma when poured and the taste is smooth.  This ale at 8.5% ABV and 30 IBU is full-bodied and very easy to sip on its own, and I can imagine that fruitcake, when in season, would pair really well with this (yes, I like fruitcake).

  1. Is the alcohol over powering since it is 8.5%?
