Brewed in a stone farmhouse in the French-speaking part of Belgium, with equipment capable of producing only 750 liters per batch and just once a week, and bottled in vessels of 750 ml, Fantome Brewery has a huge following for its saison style beer. Some of its specialties are made only once a year. I had never heard of this craft ale maker until seeing the Fantome Chocolat on the shelf at Monument Wine & Spirits, brewed with cocoa and chili powder and containing 8% alc. by volume. I really enjoyed the added flavors because after swallowing, it felt like I was left with not an aftertaste, that’s a strong word, but more like a pleasant essence of chocolate and pepper. You can bet I’ll be on the hunt for other flavors to try different combinations of herbs, juices, and spices (you’re in my sight, Pissenlit).
