El Faro, Concord CA
Tired of plain, typical, deli-style sandwiches? Enjoy Mexican food, but you’re not so adventurous? Even when the footlong places toast their sandwiches, they can still be lacking in excitement. Burritos and tacos can get equally boring, so why not try the best of both worlds: ¡una torta!
“Torta” is a term applied to many food items across the world, but in Mexico a torta is a sandwich, usually on a soft roll with mustard, mayo, lettuce, onions, avocado, tomato, jalapeños, queso fresco, and your choice of meat. August’s favorite meat for her torta is al pastor – sweet and savory pork marinated with pineapple and spices. This is her staple whenever we visit El Faro in Concord.
El Faro is one of those places that has been around forever. It is a taquería, not a sit-down where you tell the waiter your order off a menu. When you walk in you might be taken aback by the run-down feel, but the food always speaks for itself. Don’t fault the place just because they haven’t kept up with painting, since obviously the food is more important. You, reader, might not be near our El Faro, but if you want to try a torta, ask around in your area for the most authentic Mexican restaurant.
